Academicians of the CAE Member support Hubei optoelectronic information industry: build a world-class industrial cluster with Optics Valley as the leader

On August 19th, the "Jingchu Academician Tour" of the Chinese Academy of Engineering visited Wuhan. Seventeen academicians, including Li Xiaohong, President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Zhou Ji, Honorary Chairman of the Presidium of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, gathered together and went to China Information Science and Technology Group, Aerospace Sanjiang Laser Industry Research Institute, Huagong Laser Engineering Co., Ltd., Donghu Science City Exhibition Center, Hubei Optics Valley Laboratory, Hubei Luojia Laboratory and other places for research. They conducted on-site investigations to understand the characteristics, advantages and shortcomings of Hubei's optoelectronic information industry, and held academician symposiums to diagnose and provide suggestions for the development of Hubei's optoelectronic information industry cluster and the construction of scientific and technological innovation platforms.

Taking Optics Valley as the leader,
Forming a trillion level world-class optoelectronic industry cluster
Academician Zhou Ji believes that at present, the development of industrial clusters in Hubei has a good foundation. Optoelectronic information, new energy and intelligent connected vehicles, biology and life health, etc. have become advanced industrial clusters in China and have become the characteristics and advantages of Hubei's manufacturing industry. Hubei should invest its advantageous forces to build a modern industrial system and build these three industrial clusters into world-class industrial clusters.
Zhou Ji proposed the goal of building three trillion level industrial clusters. He suggested taking Wuhan Optics Valley as the leader, highlighting the advantages of optoelectronics, and building a photovoltaic information industry system throughout the province, forming a trillion level world-class photovoltaic industry cluster; Taking Wuhan Economic Development Zone as the leader, a Yangtze River automobile corridor will be formed from Shiyan to Xiangyang to Suizhou to Wuhan. While continuing to excel in traditional automobiles, efforts will be focused on rapidly developing the new energy and intelligent connected vehicle industries, creating a trillion dollar world-class cluster of new energy and intelligent connected vehicle industries; Build a world-class biological and life health industry cluster with Wuhan National Biological Industry Base as the leader, spanning from Yichang to Jingzhou, Wuhan to Huanggang along the Yangtze River.
Academician Luo Yi:
Strengthen the leading position in the optoelectronic industry,
Developing intelligent and interconnected digital economy
Academician Luo Yi, an expert in semiconductor optoelectronic technology, introduced that after years of development, Wuhan's optoelectronic industry has shown a dual dragon dance trend, driving the development of Hubei's information industry. Hubei's optical communication industry has grown into a domestic leader, with the international market share of the fiber optic cable industry and the device module industry being 25% and 12%, respectively. Optical equipment is in the first tier; The laser industry has also grown into a domestic leader, with laser equipment varieties accounting for 70% of the domestic market and output value accounting for 50%; The optoelectronic display and optoelectronic sensing industries have formed a thriving development trend.
Academician Luo Yi suggested that Hubei should break down industry and disciplinary barriers, innovate institutional mechanisms, and break through the urgently needed high-end process equipment, raw materials, and measurement equipment for industry development. At the same time, seize the opportunity to develop ubiquitous broadband information networks, intelligent sensing and lighting, chip and computing technologies, solve the bottleneck problem, strengthen the leading position of the optoelectronic industry, and promote Hubei's economy to a new level with the intelligent and interconnected digital economy.
Academician Tang Lixin:
Gathering multi-level and high-level research teams,
Establish a unique national strategic technological force
Hubei has advantages in optoelectronic technology, industry, industrial chain, technology chain, innovation chain, and talent chain. Academician Tang Lixin said that Hubei's optoelectronic industry has strong strength and has become the largest production base for fiber optic cables, optoelectronic devices, optical communication technology, small and medium-sized display panels, and three major laser equipment in China; In the field of optoelectronics, it has 11 national research platforms, including 1 national major science and technology infrastructure, 1 national research center, 6 State Key Laboratory, 1 national manufacturing innovation center, and 2 National Engineering Research Center; Optics Valley gathers the world's top talents in the field of optoelectronics. Currently, there are 12 full-time academicians and 7 innovative research groups under the National Natural Science Foundation of China in the optoelectronics field, forming a research team of over 2000 people. It is one of the most concentrated areas for high-end scientific and technological talents in the optoelectronics field worldwide.
Academician Tang Lixin suggested that the Wuhan National Laboratory of Optoelectronics should emphasize the management concepts of system planning, fine management, engineering control, and efficient innovation, and gather a multi-level and high-level research team that has been engaged in optoelectronic technology and industry for a long time, to form a unique national strategic scientific and technological force.
Academician Wu Hanming:
Differentiated development with the Yangtze River Delta,
Supporting the highly integrated development of microelectronics and optoelectronics
Suggest focusing on supporting Wuhan in building an international optoelectronic research and development industry base, "said academician Wu Hanming, a microelectronics technology expert. He suggested attaching importance to differentiated development with the Yangtze River Delta, leveraging the characteristics of Wuhan's optoelectronic communication, and forming an international optoelectronic communication industry to guide the development of optoelectronic chips; Focus on the research and development of high-end optoelectronic chip technology, such as optical target chips, and strive to occupy 25% of the global market share within five years. We should encourage the Wuhan National Laboratory of Optoelectronics to support industrialization and the highly integrated development of microelectronics and optoelectronics.
Academician You Zheng:
Promote the aggregation of three Hubei laboratories,
Make every effort to build a national laboratory
We must better integrate optoelectronic technology and integrated circuit technology, and form a new generation of mainstream information industry technology path to serve the construction of the country. Academician You Zheng, a mechanical and electronic expert, proposed a development plan for the construction of Wuhan Optoelectronics National Laboratory: to build a national strategic scientific and technological force in the field of optoelectronics, build a stable and strong national team, achieve innovation and surpassing in optoelectronic technology, and build a world-class optoelectronic technology original innovation major strategic platform.
Academician You Zheng suggested that the Wuhan National Laboratory of Optoelectronics should condense major tasks with identification, foundation, and significant strategic needs; To operate in a tangible manner and leverage group effects; We need to establish a public technology platform, combining technologies such as optoelectronics, microelectronics, and 3D heterogeneous integration, targeting six major applications, building an integrated advanced design and manufacturing platform, promoting the unified goal of the three Hubei laboratories, aggregating resources, and making every effort to build a national laboratory.
